1. to reach beyond, exceed
2. to reach out; extend
Ever so slightly frustrated at the moment.
Yet another young life looking for a Christ follower to help them make better choices. Call to a neighboring church that does outreach; can you help?
The reply: have the family come to us and try out our services and programs, I’m sure they’ll like us.
Sounds a lot like learning the Chinese language to prepare to become a missionary in China……then sitting in your living room waiting for any people of Chinese descent to come to you.
Or training to be a lifeguard, sitting at the side of a pool. When someone calls for help saying “swim to the side of the pool and I’ll pull you out…”
Jesus said in Matthew 28: 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
In Acts 1 He said: 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Sounds like “go” means…..go.
Reaching “out” means…..out.
It’s a beautiful thing when the lost find the courage to walk into our doors and we can minister to them.
More beautiful still is the picture of Christ followers going first out into their community, their “Jerusalem”, then Judea, then Samaria…..eventually reaching out to the ends of the earth.
The first, basic key to identifying if a church does, or should do, outreach is to ask if they are truly willing to go out.
If not, then it’s not outreach they’re doing.
